He loves brick as much as we do.

Mr. Mustard loves brick so much so that he needs to touch it when he sleeps.

All moved in.

A bit late on the uptake but here we are. We finally moved in Friday, February 29 and spent our first night here. Not that I’ve never moved to a new place before but it really felt pretty strange - like we were guests at somebody’s house - somebody’s rather messy house.

We are living downstairs right now, awaiting the upstairs’ transformation. Most everything is living in the damp basement and we hope everything will survive its stay. The photos don’t really tell the entire story of the bottom half of the house and that’s kinda the point. The bathroom down here feels like a lilac womb. Very purple and very… um… ugly. The kitchen is a strange mashup of perhaps an Italian halloween? I’m pretty sure that’s what the past owner was going for - well done! The downstairs salvation comes with the exposed brick - its unassuming texture and color is a big help. All the potential lies behind what is here, we just have to get to it. So, here we are.

Some swell discoveries.

After opening the wall near a window, I discovered a few interesting pieces of history. I found two Civil War era clay marbles - each with their own special glazed color. I also found a few small chunks of newspaper, presumably used to cover up drafty holes around the window. With the assistance of Sarah and Joel we used the magic powers of the Googles to search for the date of release for the two movies that appear on the paper scraps: Johnny Angel featuring George Raft and Signe Hasso and Twice Blessed featuring the Wilde Twins and Preston Foster. They were both released in 1945 with Johnny Angel not being released until December 27. This would make the paper’s date around the end of 1945/beginning of 1946.

cool, eh?

Extended stay

After going over everything last night at the house we’ve decided to stay in our apartment on Van Street until the end of February.

If we were to move in at the end of this month we would most certainly living in dust and plaster the entire time. And since the shysters sellers stole our kitchen appliances we would be living without a kitchen and that doesn’t seem all that appealing (nothing against John’s Tex Mex).

So, here we are.

Our house in its original state. We finally closed on the house. Those things that everyone says about closing on a house are true: a ton of paperwork, unintelligible language, money grabbing and overwhelming amount of trust in legal representation.

This isn’t to imply that everything remained perfectly legal since the shysters sellers decided they would take the new fridge and stove out of the downstairs and replace them with the 40 year old appliances from upstairs. Can’t people just be honest?

There is much to do and I’m certain even before it all starts I will feel overwhelmed, but here we go…
